European Society for Photobiology

Education

ESP has always devoted a great attention to educational issues, and after the 1999 Congress in Granada an "ad hoc" Committee (Education and Training Committee) was established. The main aim of this ESP activity is to allow as many young ESP Members as possible to become acquainted with new scientific environments, to widen their scientific horizons, to have the opportunity of candidly discussing with Colleagues from other Laboratories and Research Groups, to attend International Conferences, Summer School, and Congresses on the different areas of Photobiology.

The first target of the Education and Training Committee was to provide Fellowships for young ESP Members attending ESP Congresses.

ESP Congresses have not been, however, the only scientific meetings for which ESP has provided support. As a matter of fact, in 2006 9 Travel Fellowships were awarded to young ESP Members participating in the 33rd Meeting of the American Society for Photobiology, the 1st European Chemistry Congress, the 12th International Symposium on Phototropic Prokaryotes, the 1st Workshop on Biophotonics and Molecular Simulations and the 6th International Symposium on photodynamic diagnosis and therapy in clinical practice.

In 2002, another important and fruitful initiative of ESP started: a limited, but significant, number of Fellowships are every second year (the non-ESP congress year) awarded to young ESP Members so that they can spend relatively short periods in other European Laboratories and Research Groups and become familiar with a variety of research activities and widen their scientific viewpoints. Thanks to these "Short-Term Visits" Fellowships, in 2006 several young Colleagues have been spending some weeks visiting European Photobiology Laboratories: Anna Pawlak (in Cardiff, c/o Michael Boulton and Malgorzata Rozanowska, Cardiff University), Magdalena Niziolek-Kierecka (in Salzburg, c/o Barbara Krammer, University of Salzburg) and Hana Vrablikova (in Aas, Norway, c/o Yngvar Gauslaa and Arild Veidahl, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences).

The fellowship recipients sent a short report on their work in the host laboratory:
2006: Pawlak, Niziolek-Kierecka, Vrablikova.
2004: Bragin, Camerin, Chiaviello, Ntefidou.
2002: Del Vecchio, Szylagy.
