InstrumentationThe European Society for Photobiology offers many opportunities for companies interested in reaching the most qualified prospects in the dynamic, interdisciplinary field of Photobiology. The Society is one of the world's largest membership organization for photobiologists. Among its members are the most prominent, well-funded research scientists in industry, university, private, and government laboratories worldwide. Photobiologists work in a wide range of research areas including: Photochemistry, Photophysics, Photosensitisation, Photosynthesis, Photoconversion, Photomorphogenesis, Photosensory Biology, Environmental Photobiology, Chronobiology, Photoprotection, Phototoxicity, Vision, Photomedicine, DNA Damage and Repair, Photocarcinogenesis, Phototherapy, PhotoDynamic Therapy, Photodermatology, Photoimmunology. In this page we report schematic information and links of companies producing equipment of interest for researchers in Photobiology.
Mauna Kea Technologies has developed a unique fiber-based system for in vivo molecular imaging on living animals: the Cellvizio. The Cellvizio is a very innovative fluorescence imaging system that enables to observe cells at a microscopic resolution in situ in living animals. By virtue of using a very slender fiber bundle as the image guide, the Cellvizio can access tissues with minimal invasiveness and least perturbation; it is therefore the perfect instrument for e.g. PDT treatment monitoring. Other privileged applications in research are obvious such as neuroscience, cancer research, angiogenesis and vascularization, immunology, ophthalmology, etc. PhotoCure has two proprietary light sources, Aktilite CL16 and Aktilite CL128, developed for the use in Metvix photodynamic therapy (PDT): Aktilite CL128 and Aktilite CL16. The Aktilite lamps emit red LED light and are only intended for use in topical PDT of skin lesions in combination with the Metvix 160mg/g cream. The key characteristic of red light is its ability to penetrate human tissue, and the Aktilite lamps are therefore efficient also for the treatment of thicker lesions. The difference between the two lamps is the size of the light field. Aktilite CL16 illuminates areas up to 40 x 50 mm, while Aktilite CL128 illuminates areas up to 80 x 180 mm. The light dose can easily be adjusted, but a dosage of 37 J/cm² and a working distance between 50 and 80 mm is recommended. The LED light has a narrow spectrum with average wavelengths of approx. 630-635 nm. PCI Biotech has developed a light source (LumiSource®) for photobiological and photochemical in vitro research. The LumiSource® is designed to provide a stable, homogeneous irradiance over a defined illumination area of 45 x 17 cm. Other light sources, which have not been optimised with respect to homogeneity of the output, will generally provide a bell-shaped irradiance profile. Furthermore, without a proper cooling system as provided in LumiSource®, the irradiance will drop with time after ignition. The wavelength range can be selected by the end user. Biolitec is the only supplier for photodynamic therapy worldwide that offers all relevant core competencies - photosensitizers, lasers and optical fibers. Apart from the Dermatology, Tumor and Dysplasia business units, biolitec AG has also successfully developed competencies in the fields of ophthalmology, dentistry and cosmetics. With the photodynamic drug Foscan® biolitec AG possesses an approved therapeutic cancer drug for the EU. biolitec is listed in Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange market (ISIN DE0005213409). |
